Restored railroad caboose

History Meets High Altitude

Caboose Overview

Stepping onto the Colorado Mountain Caboose property feels like stepping back in time, with a modern twist. Perched at 9,880 feet and backing up to the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, this historic getaway pairs an authentically restored vintage railcar with a custom, depot-style companion house.

Whether you are watching the golden aspens change in the fall, snowshoeing through a winter wonderland, or catching panoramic mountain views from the outdoor firepit, this is more than a place to sleep. It’s an unforgettable Rocky Mountain adventure designed for train lovers, families, and anyone looking to unplug in style.

What's Inside

Caboose Key Features
Sleeping & Layout

Two structures, two private bedrooms, and a handful of extra spots that come in handy when the kids are along for the trip.

  • One bedroom in the caboose. One in the depot.

  • Pullout sofa in the depot.

  • Cupola mattress up top in the caboose. Kids love it.

  • Carpeted loft area in the depot, sleeping-bag friendly.

  • Sleeps up to 6.

Amenities & Comfort

Off-grid doesn't mean roughing it. The caboose and depot are both heated by potbelly stoves, fully wired with WiFi and streaming, and stocked with the things you actually need.

Fully equipped kitchens in both structures

  • Full bathrooms with linens and basic toiletries

  • Washer and dryer

  • WiFi and television with streaming

  • Movie screen for group viewing

  • Games and puzzles when the WiFi's not enough

  • Solar power with backup generator

Outside:

  • Social deck with firepit and grill

  • Mountain and valley views from every angle

  • Quiet. Real, actual, deep mountain quiet.

Down the hill in Idaho Springs
  • Indian Hot Springs (historic, naturally heated)

  • Clear Creek for whitewater rafting and fishing

  • Beau Jo's mountain pizza

  • A handful of craft breweries

  • The Argo Gold Mine

  • St. Mary's Glacier trailhead, 20 minutes away

Location & Views

You're tucked into the mountains above Idaho Springs, the 1859 gold rush town that sits 30 miles west of Denver on I-70. The caboose backs to the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, with hundreds of miles of OHV, 4WD, and dirt biking trails behind you — including the Yankee Hill network.

  • Year-round, there's a reason to be here:

  • Fall. Golden aspens you'll be tempted to photograph from the deck.

  • Winter. Snowshoeing, tubing, and three ski areas within an hour (Loveland, Echo Mountain, and Winter Park).

  • Spring & Summer. Wildflowers, hummingbirds, mild mountain air, and rivers running fast through town.
